The Art of Practical Spirituality: How to Bring More Passion, Creativity and Balance into Everyday Life
Published in Paperback by Summit Univ Press (01 April, 2000)
Authors: Elizabeth Clare Prophet and Patricia R. Spadaro
Average review score:

Book rings true
"The Art of Practical Spirituality" is a great mix of ancient and modern spiritual teachings. I found that, as some books just have one or two really practical ideas, this book has it all in one! Most of us these days live busy lives with work, study and family, but we're looking for a bit more in life, a way to live in harmony with themselves, their world and Spirit. Or maybe, like me, you're just someone who believes that life really isn't lived to its fullest until you've explored the spiritual dimensions too. One of the chapters talked about living in the present - i thought i did till i read this! Just to give an example of the common threads-I found links to buddhist and christian traditions when I read this chapter. This book brings them all together plus a bit more. Another chapter that I really enjoyed was 'let your spiritual self do the work' - hey, that is just what i need! And perhaps the best thing of all about this book is its simple, practical and a really convenient size! Enjoy!

Prompt to Action
The title is well suited for this book. I found that the content inspired me to action with ideas that I had not previously considered. I beleive that any spiritually oriented material which provides easy to understand and practical ideas to promote healthy spiritual growth is well worth the time and money spent. This is a short book and one in which I intend to pass along to friends and family. It is also good to keep handy and refer back to and refresh ones perspectives and approach to spiritual growth activities.

I also enjoyed the quotes from the writings and sayings of spiritual saints, mystics, etc, as well as exerpts from ancient writings like the Bible. This gave the book a more "global" and "enternal" feel, a feeling that no one is left out regardless of their religion. It does require an "open mind" if you are already "set" in one spiritual tradition. Read and enjoy! And God bless your spiritual journey.

The Artist's Palette: A Storybook and Sketchbook

A Lesson in the Value of Being and Individual
This is an exquisite book that is more than just a storybook. It is about "a shy little girl who loved to draw" but who suffers because her classmates think her renditions are "weird," only to find....

Well, I can't give away the end, can I?

Any child--especially any little girl--will love this book. It comes with a tiny palette charm, a place to draw her own self-portrait, and pages designed for other creative efforts.

Carolyn Howard-Johnson, author of "This is the Place"

I lovely little book
The magic charm books are so wonderful! The Artist's pallet was just as great as the other 10! A story of a little girl who knows what she loves to do! It's just great!

Ashes of Britannia (Garwood, Haley Elizabeth. Warrior Queen Series.)
Published in Paperback by Writers Block (01 March, 2001)
Author: Haley Elizabeth Garwood
Average review score:

Celtic Warrior Queen Boadicea Rules!
An excellently written book about the life and times of a little known historical queen. Boadicea is a Celtic queen, mother, and Druid priestess who fought the enormous Roman army which invaded what is now known as Great Britain. It is a story of a woman who struggles to understand the Romans and tries to live with them in peace with her husband, King Prasutagus. When he dies, the Romans do not recognize her as the Iceni leader and begin a war that they wish they had never started. Seutonius, Roman army commander and eventually governor in Britain, is another historical figure in awe of the Celtic queen, and also wants peace. However, his Roman military subordinates make unspeakable trouble against Queen Boadicea and her daughters, Sydelle and Neila. Queen Boadicea sets Britain on fire and both races cause massive bloodshed between the two peoples. A fantastic story that weaves all of the elements of early Celtic life and struggles together with poetic flair that elevates the historical detail.

Ashes of Britannia
Boadicea is a Druid-Queen. General Suetonius, a Roman, seeks to make peace with her. But, Boadicea wants vengeance for the Roman soldiers having raped her two daughters. Led by their warrior-queen, the Druids and their followers fight to drive the Romans from Britannia. Ashes of Britannia is an historical accounting of the ongoing battle between the Druids of Britain and the Romans. Haley Elizabeth Garwood writes recreates some of the best of ancient times in an almost lyrical fashion..

This is a masterful work -- getting a little out of date now, but still well worth a read for the section on the history of IQ testing alone.

Attention's Loop: A Sculptor's Reverie on the Coexistence of Substance and Spirit
Published in Hardcover by Harry N Abrams (01 April, 1999)
Authors: Elizabeth King and Katherine Wetzel
Average review score:

A truly original modern artist
Ms. King is not only a great artist but an original thinker. Her sculptures, mechanical self-portraits fashioned from wood and metal, are amazingly realistic and beautiful yet at the same time a step beyond reality. As a craftsman, she is truly gifted with her hands. As a writer, she is able to examine the fields of history, philosophy, and science through the lens of her art and make us rethink the meaning of the human brain and senses. Especially fascinating was her research into the history of the homunculus.

As an added bonus, the book is beautifully designed (even won an award for book design).

Crystaline romp
A crystalline romp reflecting tension and reverie involved in the creation of that which is in our image. King's prose is elegant, pithy, never prolix, illuminating topics from the Golem to ETA Hoffman's Olympia while passing on the way thorough Jacquard's loom and Vaucanson's creations.

Throughout this shimmering work are dispersed aching photographs of King's Pupil, a jointed movable sculpture; her Galetea, who seems, at any moment, about to spring to life.

I without reservation recommend this work to anyone interested in the creation of works in the image of "Man," from sculptors to professors of AI.

A Baby's Garden "Introducing Your Baby to the Joy of the Garden" Elizabeth St. Cloud Muse Illustrated by: Eva Saull Published by: Little, Brown and Company 2001 ISBN: 0-316-60873-4 Nonfiction

"A Baby's Garden" is a lovely way for gardening parent's to introduce their love of horticulture and nature with their most precious new addition. The opening page has a frame to put the little one's picture in. Each section has a list of suggested activities followed by pages to record your adventures in. The cutest thing is a place to put babies muddy handprints during different stages of their growth. Babies love the chance to get dirty without Mom or Dad panicking. There are a couple of pages in the back with wax paper type envelopes attached where you can press the child's first flowers, leaves, etc. As a gardener I believe this would be a wonderful way to explore the garden with your infant and allow both parent and child to experience the joys of the garden and continue learning

Busy Mommy of 2 boys who love the garden
What a great idea! My boys love to be in the garden with me, talking about the things that we discover there. I will always cherish the time we spend in the garden, and what better way to remember it. The illustrations are adorable. :)

Bachelor Bess: The Homesteading Letters of Elizabeth Corey, 1909-1919 (American Land and Life Series)
Published in Hardcover by University of Iowa Press (December, 1990)
Authors: Philip L. Gerber, Elizabeth Corey, and Wayne Franklin
Average review score:

This book is great!
What a courageous woman Bess Corey was to go into the unkown territory of mostly crude men and make a home for herself. She didn't let anyone take advantage of her, yet she was sweet. She was an honest, humorous, hardworking woman. This book kept my interest from beginning to end. The only disappointment was that she didn't write more letters! This would be a great book for anyone who wants to really understand how America was built.

Don't Miss This!
I came across this book purely by accident in the library, and since the title sounded interesting, I decided to check it out just to see what the letters were like. I was expecting dry letters written by a hardened woman. Boy, was I wrong -- I love Bess! She's so funny, and her letters back home are wonderfully descriptive. At 21, she left Iowa to stake a claim in South Dakota. I'm only about a third of the way through the book right now, and she's living alone in a tiny 2-room house on her claim, getting up at 5 to walk two miles through the snow to the schoolhouse where she teaches. At night, she writes these letters home, describing her day in great detail. This book is a treasure. I'm ordering a copy for my home library right now. :-)

Balto and the Great Race
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (May, 2000)
Authors: Elizabeth Cody Kimmel and Nora Koerber
Average review score:

Balto: not just for kids
We purchased this book after seeing the real Balto (courtesy of the art of taxidermy) at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. Our quest in Northeast Ohio, where Balto enjoyed his senior years, was prompted by my seven year-old daughter's love-affair with the animated film about this dog, who navigated a lost sled team carrying life-saving medicine through Alaska in 1925. I hereby confess publicly that, after myself reading the book, which is aimed at the 9 year-old set, I cried, much as I had done 35 years before after reading "Lassie Come Home." This account, however, is much more compelling than "Lassie" or "Old Yeller," because it entirely factual (possibly excepting the subjective thoughts imputed to the protagonist).

The author did her homework researching this story about a sled dog who was just one of the pack facing poor odds against daunting weather and unrequiting expanses of blinding snow and ice. When the alpha dog loses the trail, and another refuses to lead, the team turns to Balto to bring them and their cargo safely to rest in Nome.

Perhaps Balto deserves an authentic, grown-up biography, but this one will serve in the meantime. It appears to be the definitive account.

A teacher in PA
This is an excellent book if you are interested in the Iditarod race in Alaska. The book helps young children understand the importance of perserverence and is a great introduction to history for the very young (6-8).A true story that inspires people to understand the bond between animals and people.
